Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti will be the commander of Crew-5 when it departs in October of this year. The International Space Station (ISS) crew is poised to undergo a shift. She would thereafter assume the role for the first time as a woman from Europe. Russian Astronaut Oleg Artemyev, who is now a part of the Expedition-67 crew, is in charge of the ISS.
Samantha, 45, said when her name was revealed, “My promotion to the rank of Commander humbles me. With my background, I can effectively manage a highly skilled team both in orbit and in space. I’m interested to learn.”

Samantha has been in charge of the US sector at the ISS ever since she arrived there in April of this year. Projects from Europe, Canada, Japan, and the United States are included.
