System behind moving vehicle charging on electric highway:

Two methods are used to charging moving vehicle on electric highway-

  1. By using an overhead power line ie electric wire installed above the road.
  2. By laying the power line inside the road ie through ground level power supply.

Electric wire installed above the road:

Electric lines are affixed to the road in this. The pantographs on top of hybrid or electric cars make touch with these cables when they pass underneath them. As a result, the electricity begins to travel from the cable to that car, charging its battery. As long as the automobiles are in touch with these lines, their batteries are charged.

The car returns to its diesel or gasoline engine mode after turning to the opposite side and losing touch with the wire. That is, it begins running on gasoline-diesel instead of an electric battery.

On these roadways, charging is only available for electric or hybrid vehicles. Hybrid automobiles are those that operate on both electricity and diesel-petrol.

Only large vehicles, such as trucks and buses can be charged with this technology.

Electric highways are designed in such a way that there is no fear of collision between vehicles or electric shock.

Ground level power supply:

In this, the road’s electric connection is built right into the pavement. This involves installing such coils or rails underneath the road so that electricity may flow through them. With this method, there are two methods to charge:

  • Electric Rail
  • Wireless Charging

Electric Rail:

The electric rail or coil put on these highways makes touch with the unique sort of coils in the cars when they cross over them, which causes their batteries to begin charging.

Electric wires and electromagnetic transmitters put under the road produce an electromagnetic field, according to Fleetevolution. A specific coil inside the automobile that is travelling down that route draws this energy in; it is then utilised to charge the battery, extending the car’s range.

Wireless Charging:

This method of ground level power delivery, or charging from the road, is also used. In this case, the automobiles are charged wirelessly (via inductive charging). In this form of technology, when a car comes into touch with a charging point on the road, it is solely charged through the sensor and not through a charging coil. The wireless charging of mobile phones is an illustration of this.

Technology for ground level power supplies can recharge any vehicle, including cars, in addition to trucks and buses. The unique feature is that ground level power technology is more affordable than overhead power technology.

World’s Electric Highways:

  • South Korea first built a 7.5 kilometer long electric route for buses in its city of Gumi in 2013. Buses plying on this road were charged with wireless charging equipment installed on it.
  • In 2015, South Korea built a second electric route for buses in Sejong city. In 2016, Korea launched two more electric routes for buses in Gumi.
  • Sweden introduced the world’s first electrified road in Stockholm in 2018 to charge the batteries of cars, buses and trucks.
  • In 2019, Germany opened the world’s first electric highway near the city of Frankfurt, on which hybrid trucks can be recharged. This electric road, about 10 km long, has been built by Siemens Mobility Company.
  • The US, UK, Japan and France are also working on building electric highways and electric roads.
  • Work on the electric highway project is going on in India for the last several years. The country’s first electric highway is expected to be commissioned in 2023.

Electric Highway in India:

India’s proposal to construct electrified motorways got under way in 2016. Nitin Gadkari, India’s transport minister at the time, said that soon, like Sweden, India will have electrified motorways.

For the purpose of building the longest electric highway in the world, India has created a programme dubbed the Atal Green Electricity National Highway, or AHVRM. First, the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway and Delhi-Agra Yamuna Expressway will be converted to electric roads.

In December 2020, Yamuna Expressway had an electric highway testing. The trial to convert the Delhi-Jaipur highway to an electric one began on September 9, 2022, and will run for one month.

By March 2023, it is anticipated that 500 km of electric roads, including the Delhi-Jaipur Highway and the Delhi-Agra Yamuna Expressway, would be operational. This will be the first and longest electric roadway in the nation. Berlin now has the 109 km-long electric roadway that is the longest in the world.

The government intends to construct an electric highway on the 1,300 km-long Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Gadkari has previously stated before the Lok Sabha. By March 2023, this highway is anticipated to be finished. On this expressway, there are plans to construct a special lane for electric vehicles.

For two reasons, electric roads are seen as a game-changer. First off, this will enable cars to run without using fossil fuels like gasoline and diesel. Second: As a result, there is no longer any air pollution. The globe has a big problem with pollution.

The Siemens business claims that if 30% of the roadways used by trucks were electrified, the amount of carbon dioxide released annually would be reduced by around 7 million tonnes. In other words, the issue of air pollution will be significantly lessened.

The building of electrified roads will reportedly save 32 lakh crore gallons of gasoline and diesel annually, according to the Transport Ministry. Additionally, this will save the cost of logistics in the nation by almost Rs 1 lakh crore annually.

Nitin Gadkari, the minister of transport, claims that the government is investing Rs 2.5 lakh crore in the construction of electric motorways. According to the administration, this would result in a sharp expansion in the market for electric vehicles in the nation.

The government’s proposal to construct 26 new greenfield expressways around the nation includes the electric roads. According to Gadkari, the government intends to plant roughly 30 million trees along the country’s roadways beneath the Greenfield Expressway.
